Item duplication is a common exploit in many RPGs, but the first place I saw Item replication was in Pokemon Blue on the Gameboy. This one was a fairly common and well known exploit at the time and was fairly popular at the time among the "elite" Pokemon players of the time. The glitch was performed going to Viridian City and talking to the Old Man who stands at the exit who initially blocks your path. When he asks if you are in a hurry and you would select "no" to allow him to catch a Weedle. After this you would Fly to Cinnibar Island and Surfing along the right hand side of the Island on the shoreline. After doing this you would encounter MissingNo which it was usually best to run from unless you wanted your file corrupted by the glitchymon. Once this was all done the 6th item in the bag would be glitched and allow repeated use a few times before going to 99. This glitch was most commonly used to duplicate Rare candies or Master Balls and really does ruin the whole joy and wonder of catching Pokemon. The challenge comes from being strong enough to battle the next challenge and beating your opponent until they are weak enough to submit to you to catch them. It does not come from having a feast before the Elite Four so all your Pokemon are level 99 and encountering the majesty of all the Legendary Pokemon just to throw a ball at them before they can show you their power, maybe with one but not all. This glitch got on my nerves because Pokemon was about showing off, where one person might not have captured Moltres another might not have caught Mewtwo and trading the rare ones to fill and evolve your pokedex, not from cheap use of items which are rare or one of a kind.
