10 Deliberate Gameplay Features That Ruin Your Immersion

5. Invisible Walls

Now this is a gameplay limitation that has REALLY stood the test of time. Is there a single gamer alive who hasn't run right out towards the beautiful outskirts of a game's landscapes, only to smack their poor player's head on thin air and run on the spot like a ninny?

It's no mystery as to why invisible walls are a thing. After all, the playable terrain can't go on forever, and the developers need some way to keep their inquisitive players hemmed into where they're supposed to be. These walls can be anywhere at all; way out to sea, high up in the sky, or, most egregiously, right in plain sight.

Wouldn't a simple way around this be putting a wall up to block off inaccessible areas? Or even a huge mountain range that's too big and unclimbable to see over? In some cases, that's exactly what happens, and well done them!

But it definitely doesn't happen enough for my liking. And as amusing as it is, trying to dress invisible walls up as quirky little forcefield generators doesn't solve the problem either. Sorry, Spyro.
