Mass Effect 2 is a very time consuming game; you play as Commander Shepherd who has been bought back to life by the highly dubious Cerberus corporation in order to help stop the impending threat of the Collectors and Reapers. To do this you have to recruit a crack-team of the galaxies finest fighters from a broad spectrum of alien races, and in doing this you learn about the characters and bond with them. You can even start a romantic relationship with some of them it seems that even in space you need a release. So, when it gets to the final mission and youve forgotten to upgrade your ship, you didnt have enough renegade or paragon points to resolve the conflict between Tali and Legion and you picked the wrong people to do certain jobs, youll be utterly mortified at the ending you get. Everyone dies like a shoddy B-grade horror movie; everyone you worked so hard on recruiting and gaining their loyalty lies dead, shot down by some advanced alien weaponry. In a puff of smoke all your work is undone and a set of characters youve genuinely bonded with have died and subsequently failed in their mission. A Silver Lining? Even if your version of Shepherd died you are still able to play Mass Effect 3, though be warned it has the potential to be even sadder.
