It must first be stated that this particularly depressing ending is but one of the 17 possible outcomes of Quantic Dreamss masterful story-driven crime game. In order to access it, Ethan must get arrested and Madison and Norman have to either die or fail to get to the warehouse at all. In other words, your performance during this play-through of Heavy Rain had to have been pretty woeful, so perhaps you are deserving of the fate which befalls you. It is hard to wish such an ending on even the most hopeless of gamers though as as its name suggests the Hopeless ending to Heavy Rain is deeply psychologically draining. As if the extremely troubling death of his eldest son Jason in the games prologue wasnt enough, in the Hopeless ending Ethan is arrested for the death of his younger son Shaun and is found guilty of being the Origami killer. Consumed by guilt at having being unable to save either of his sons, Ethan hangs himself in prison. Quantic Dream? More like Quantic Nightmare. A Silver Lining? One ending down, sixteen to go. Perhaps on your next play-through youll keep Shaun alive and keep his dad out of jail...
