In one of the nastier entries on this list, The Darkness makes sure its prominent death really hits home.

The game establishes Jenny as the only glimmer of hope for protagonist and long time boyfriend Jackie Estacado. That is until she’s kidnapped, taken to the orphanage where she and Jackie grew up, and brutally murdered. To add insult to injury Jackie’s body is host to a demonic spirit called the Darkness which forces him to watch his girlfriend be attacked and eventually killed, unable to do anything about it, even though he arrived in time to save her. After the attackers flee, Jackie tries to kill himself but the Darkness stops him.

This one is definitely a rough watch but it gives Jackie, and you, more than enough vengeance-fuelled rage to get you through the rest of the game with serious emotional investment.
