Nier: Automata is a rather unique game in many aspects, from its compelling characters, existential story arcs, moral dilemmas and - of course - robots trying to procreate en masse.

This incident occurs near the very beginning of the game and cements exactly what kind of experience the player will be treated to for the rest of their playthroughs.

Playing as 2B in a landscape littered with ruins and robots in abundant supply, the latter are presented as enemies to be destroyed. However, moments like this, which illustrate the desire of some robots to replicate, rather than eradicate human culture throw these assumptions into chaos.

The erratic group dynamic of the robots desperately trying to create a “baby” is disturbing not only for how unexpected it is, but for the implications. This indicates that robots can express emotions and have interests other than the destruction they were seemingly programmed to commit.

Has the player being seeking absolution or committing their own abominations by attacking the robots? Does it depend on the robot in question? Or does it depend on the player? Either way, Nier: Automata makes sure will see the consequences of whichever actions they take.
