10 Early Game Enemies That Came As A Nasty Surprise
8. Cephalo – Resident Evil 5
Killing zombies by shooting them in the head is a time-honoured gaming tradition. So when neophyte Resident Evil 5 players run into Majini they’ll happily clock every example right between the eyes....that is, until a thrashing two meter tentacle bursts from its neck.
As if the body-horror was not enough, the first time you fight one will be in a confined space, where the tentacle’s rapid strikes will stun-lock your character.
Worse still, the Cephalo gains increased durability to its body, leaving the furiously whipping tentacle as the most viable target. But with the only stationary spot on the tentacle being where the neck used to be, taking the Cephalo down is far from easy, especially if you’re playing on console.
It gets better. Cephalo are common going forward, so you never know when that innocent head shot will leave you fighting one, two, or even three at a time. Add the fact that you’re in a crowd of Majini, and you will grow to dread the sight of these things.
Resident Evil 5 is often accused of being brainless but in the form of the Cephalo Capcom gave players a good shock while ingeniously subverting an old trope.
