10 Early Game Enemies That Came As A Nasty Surprise

6. Maldanen Apprentice – Neverwinter Nights

D&D spellcasters are, as a rule, dangerous if you let them get their buffs and spells off, and laughably squishy if you don’t. So when you come across the Maldanen Apprentice in Blacklake, veterans will instinctively rush him and even new players would have faced enough spellcasters to do the same.

Naturally Bioware were aware of this, and surrounded the apprentice with imps, who run interference, and have him cast Ghostly Visage, a spell that makes him difficult to hit. Annoying, to be sure, but not particularly life-threatening.

Then the ‘apprentice’ starts casting Ice Storm. Taking one of these, at low level, is bad enough, and two will kill you, but three in rapid succession will astonish even the most experienced D&D players.

For new players, this becomes an impossible fight, especially if they’re playing as a class which can’t cast spells, such as a fighter, or who missed the Scroll of Silence.

This is such a brutally unfair fight that you either rage quit, or doggedly pressed on until you got lucky, interrupted all of his attacks, and finally beat him. Either way, you’ll be very glad to see the back of him.
