10 Early Game Enemies That Came As A Nasty Surprise
5. Meonekton – Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII
Lightning Returns lulls players into a false sense of security. All of its early enemies, even a giant muscle-bound dragon, can be defeated using the tried and true method of mashing the attack keys until the beast is dead. So when the Meonekton comes along players can be excused for sticking with what works.
Problem is, because of high physical and magical resistances, attempting to brute force the encounter leaves the neophyte player flailing at a nigh invulnerable wall whose regular attacks, while not too damaging, can easily stun-lock Lightning.
In order to defeat the Meonekton, the player will need to stun it (called Stagger in-game), a tricky mechanic that takes practice to master. The player will then need to use an even trickier mechanic – Perfect Block – to avoid being debuffed.
And you want to avoid that debuff, because should you fail the Meonekton becomes unnervingly aggressive, using two highly damaging attacks that slow and knock Lightning back, turning a frustrating encounter into a potentially fatal one.
In fact, the Meonekton comes as such a shock that most strategy guides recommend that new players avoid it entirely. Good advice against a nasty foe.
