10 Early Game Enemies That Came As A Nasty Surprise

4. Bark Scorpion – Fallout: New Vegas

Bethesda Softworks

If you’ve played Fallout then you know radscorpions, and you know they can be a proper nuisance. In the form of the Bark Scorpion New Vegas introduced a deadly new cousin.

Unlike radscorpions, Bark Scorpions can jump and, if you’re close enough to find that out chances are you’ve already been stung. In that case, you character is now afflicted with venom more potent than that of a regular radscorpion (5 points of damage per second as opposed to 3). And, being low level, you’re watching their HP drain away at an alarming rate.

Worse, the starting rifle is an inaccurate clunker and the venom is causing you to see double which, along with your screaming panic, makes the scorpion a tricky target to hit.

While you’ll have to be rather unlucky for them to die, the Bark Scorpion will almost certainly reduce your character’s health by half.

This is key, because in a first class bit of trolling by Obsidian the Bark Scorpion spawns specifically during the tutorial – directly in your path – and only when you are sent to fetch certain ingredients. And the thing you’re gathering ingredients to craft? Healing Powder.
