10 Early Viral Video Games You Forgot Were Everywhere
5. Doodlejump
Doodlejump feels very representative of the first wave of mobile games that we saw back in the late 2000s. At its core DoodleJump is incredibly basic. All you have to do is see how high you can jump. The game gets more difficult the higher you get, but it's never frustrating. But really there's not much more than that. Unlike later mobile games it doesn't even have particularly flashy graphics to sell itself on.
Yet it dominated the app store for months. It was the most downloaded game for four months straight (until it was over taken by entry #1 on this list!) and has been downloaded fifteen million times over the past nine years! DoodleJump has become such a cultural icon that it has been mentioned in shows such as Park and Recreation and The Big Bang Theory.
Unlike most of the other enteries on this list, Doodlejump never received a offical sequel or spin-off. However a competitive version of the game was supposedly in development back in 2016, so maybe one day Doodlejump will make a return as one of the most downloaded apps on the store.
