8. Apotheon
Apotheon might not have the biggest budget on this list, but it's certainly one of the most visually striking. Dressed up to look like a Grecian Urn, this action-RPG title takes place on an extremely populous Mount Olympus. Unlike most games of its ilk, Apotheon doesn't tend to gear gate players in their exploration of the 2D open world. Instead, you'll pretty much have the run of the entire game world from the get-go (although good luck killing some of the more hardened enemies from the beginning.) Combat is brutal and bloody, and the exploration is about as satisfying as a Metroidvania-style platformer can get. If you've got a soft spot for Ancient Greek mythology and 2D action, Apotheon might be your first must-buy of the year.
