10 Essential Dungeons And Dragons Video Games For Hardcore Fans
1. Baldur’s Gate
And finally, the franchise we’re all excited about, Baldur’s Gate. By the time this article is released there is said to be more news on the release of Baldur’s Gate 3 and frankly I’m ecstatic. I have no doubt in my mind that it’s going to be a masterpiece, but while we’re all eagerly awaiting it, we still have the phenomenal first two games in the series. In my opinion, the first Baldur’s Gate stands an inch taller than it’s sequel, but there are merits to both games and if you said that 2 is better you’d be correct in many ways.
The first game launched the Infinity Engine and changed the way we look at D&D games as a whole. It represented the ruleset for advanced 2nd edition, as many of these games did, and it’s without a doubt the best game ever created on this ruleset. Using what’s now referred to as a ‘real time with pause’ system, Baldur’s Gate was incredibly innovative in its design and has some of the most well-told story and character development ever to be seen in gaming.
The second one is just as amazing, improving on the size of the map, adding in more capacity for companion characters which also came with a stronger romance system, and there was more customization for evil characters. The first dungeon in the sequel might be tiresome but there are mods out there to completely skip it, and even if you don’t mod it the time spent irritated at this dungeon is nothing compared to the countless hours of pure D&D enjoyment to be had.
