Rebooting a franchise is never easy. Never wanting to alienate the fans that made the series such a staple to begin with but also attempting to steer clear from playing things too safe and failing to attract a new audience, reinvigorating a big name like God of War was always going to be a tough balancing act, but fortunately the developers at Santa Monica Studios seem to have pulled off this unenviable task.

Approaching Kratos' love for bloody hack-and-slash combat with a new-found maturity, the studio is attempting to give the notoriously one-note world of GoW far more nuance than it ever has before, without losing the grand, mythical scale that the series is known for.

Again, this is another balancing act which could turn out disastrously if it favours one side over the other, but a serious story could allow the quasi-reboot to go toe-to-toe with the likes of Uncharted and The Last of Us if the devs execute it correctly.

A few years ago nobody thought that the God of War franchise had any fight left in it, but 2018 could usher in a new lease of life for Kratos and his beautiful new beard.
