7. Shenmue III

Successfully Kickstarted back in 2015, the long-anticipated follow up to the cult-classic Shenmue II finally has a vague release date for sometime this year, and has managed to retain its hype despite a rather controversial development history.

Always being a technically ambitious series but a commercial under-performer, the third game is attempting to branch out from its niche market and ride the renewed interest in JRPGs to attract a new audience. Thanks to successes like Persona and Yakuza, the latest entry in the franchise should find a bigger audience than it did in the early 2000s, but only if the developers don't sacrifice its distinct identity in search of mainstream appeal.

Whether or not it actually comes out in 2018 is another story altogether though, as while the developers are insistent that news is coming soon, it has yet to materialise. Still, regardless of if it comes out tomorrow or December 31st, Shenmue III is one of the most anticipated games of the year, and it's going to be interesting to see if it can satisfy the fans who have been waiting for a new instalment in the franchise for over a decade.
