10 Exact Moments That Made Fans Hate Gaming Franchises

5. Samus Freaks Out Over Ridley - Metroid

As Nintendo epically dragged their feet on delivering a still-gestating follow-up to 2007's Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Metroid fans had to make do with the 2010 inter-quel Metroid: Other M, a game that single-handedly ruined the series' much-loved hero, Samus Aran.

In a misguided attempt to lend greater psychological depth to Samus, the alien-slaughtering icon was re-conceived as a fragile, scared young woman in a manner that was totally inconsistent with her prior, albeit mysterious, established character.

There's a shocking disconnect between the entertaining gameplay and the cut-scenes, the latter of which represents Samus as though she's a different character entirely compared to the earlier Metroid games.

This is most infamously realised during Samus' confrontation with antagonist Ridley, where she freezes up, panics and basically doesn't behave remotely how fans expect Samus to.

After all, she's kicked Ridley's ass countless times before, so all this did was demonstrate a patent lack of regard for who Samus is.

Developer Team Ninja reportedly aimed to make Samus an "appealing human character", but by transforming her into a bunny-stunned stereotype, they basically ruined her instead.

Thankfully 2017's Metroid: Samus Returns got the character back on terra firma, though it falls to the upcoming Metroid Prime 4 to fully restore the Samus' reputation.
