God of War: Ascension features by far the most challenging sequence from any game in the series when played on Normal difficulty, the infamous Trial of Archimedes - an endurance trial so brutally punishing that many reviews criticised it and its difficulty was eventually nerfed with a patch.

As the player climbs a tower towards Ascension's endgame, they're forced to battle waves of increasingly difficult enemies, and to make matters worse, there are no checkpoints nor any health or magic orbs to be found.

This meant that failure required starting the gargantuan task all over again, as represented a massive brick wall to many players.

This left them so pissed off that they quit the game until SCE Santa Monica Studio delivered a patch two weeks after release, which doled out orbs after each wave to make the challenge more manageable.

Still no checkpoints, though, but it at least allowed players to pick things back up and, you know, actually finish the game.
