9. "Close Your Eyes Honey. Don't Look." - Eli (Half-Life 2: Episode Two)

Due to Gordon Freeman's muteness, Half-Life as a series has always had to rely on strong supporting characters to keep the player emotionally invested. Half-Life 2 does this perfectly, making Eli Vance and his daughter Alex as important to the story as Gordon himself. The final scenes of Half-Life 2: Episode Two sees Gordon defending a rocket launch which will separate the Combine from their homeworld. The launch is successful and Gordon leaves to hunt for Dr. Mossman with Eli and Alex. ...Or so it seemed. Instead, a pair of Advisors attack them and leave Gordon and Alex pinned to the wall, powerless to aid Eli who is brutally murdered in front of them in the most tear-jerking scene in the series to date. Rather than quickly rush out some plot details or try and make Eli out to be a massive hero, Valve simply decided to let Eli's final words show exactly who and what he cares about - Alex. He accepts his fate, begs her to look away and dies sadly but proudly. The biggest sting of this scene, of course, is that there is no continuation yet. The Half-Life series is completely up in the air right now and that's a real shame as Eli's final moments show the strong connection fans have with the Half-Life world and it's inhabitants.
