4. "Never Thought It Would End Like This, Huh Maria?" - Dom (Gears Of War 3)

Gears of War has a reputation for being an overly-masculine series; overcrowded by tough guys with muscles for brains. Still, there are some genuinely emotional moments scattered throughout and most of them come from Dom's search for his wife Maria. After years of searching, Dom finally finds Maria in Gears of War 2. Torture and despair have left her in a malnourished, empty state though and Dom euthanises her to end her struggle - it's a genuinely sad moment. As a result, Dom changes dramatically in Gears Of War 3. He seems willing to accept his death at any moment and he has grown a big mess of a beard, showing his lack of care towards life following Maria's death. Unsurprisingly then, Gears Of War 3 proves to be Dom's last mission but he goes out in a manner befitting his character. With Marcus and the rest of the team overrun by Locust, Dom plows a truck into a tanker, killing himself and all the Locust forces in the area in one huge explosion. In his last moments, he tearfully looks upwards and tells Maria that he never thought it would end like this - a bitter reflection on his life in a warzone. It's a fitting ending to a character who had been on a downwards spiral for sometime; if anybody deserved to go out in a blaze of glory, it was Dom.
