10 Fan-Made Video Game Remakes That Were Better Than The Original
7. DoomRL
The amount of Doom mods and upgrades that fans have made over the years is nothing short of impressive. But for all the additional blood and gore mods, the updated graphics, and the welcome addition of brutal finishing moves, you're not going to usurp the granddaddy of first-person-shooters with another first-person-shooter. That's why the DoomRL fan remake went an entirely different but welcome direction altogether. Eschewing the FPS genre in favour of a roguelike RPG format - hence the RL in the title - DoomRL is a turn-based RPG where the end goal is to simply survive for as long as possible before the forces of Hell rip you apart. Instead of featuring the same levels over and over again, it has randomly generated environments that randomly spawn monsters and items. Not only do you essentially get an infinite amount of game to play with, but there's an RPG levelling system to account for, as well as the ability to craft gear and weapons for your doomed space marine. This fan remake is less Doom and more like Fallout or anything that Bethesda makes, and that is what makes it so awesome. As awesome as that impressive-looking Doom reboot is going to be, a little outside-of-the-box thinking like DoomRL could've really livened up a two decade old franchise.
My life story is nothing special. I haven't cured ebola, I'm nowhere near stopping terrorism, and I'm still working on that climate change problem.
Instead, all I've done so far is put a few hundred words together in an attempt to make people laugh.
