10 Features Pokémon Sword & Shield Desperately Needs
5. Much Less Handholding
Pokémon Sun & Moon were decent games, and where you rank them in comparison to the other six generations largely comes down to personal preference. However, there’s no doubting they served up some changes, and they weren’t all well received.
The gimmicks, as already discussed, were a mixed bag, but there were more changes than those. Trials were a decent change of pace, but most trainers were happy to see the return of bona fide gyms in the trailer.
Hopefully, the return of a more combative way of progressing means less handholding through the game itself. From the very first game, Pokémon has had lore there for those who seek it. You needed to explore buildings, talk to defeated trainers or NPCs and read signs to understand the world you were in.
In classic JRPG style, older games required you to talk to various random NPCs to progress, the most obvious example being the gardener in Gold & Silver who helps you deal with Sudowoodo.
Sun & Moon though unleashed cut scene after cut scene after cut scene. They were so determined that you not miss a thing that you never really got to discover anything. Hopefully the balance is reset in Galar.
