5. Alyx Vance (Half Life)

Some say she's heart and soul of Half-Life thanks to going up against mute protagonist Gordon Freeman, as hacker Alyx and her loveable giant mech-protector Dog are with you throughout the vast majority of the series. It's always hard to write characters that can deal with a silent hero and make the whole thing feel natural (remember the first time you realised halfway through GTA III that you'd not spoken a word?) but in this case it's pulled off remarkably well, mostly because of Vance's down-to-earth personality and a handful of brilliant quips, giggles and affectations that make you very glad she's never away for too long. The wait for Half-Life 3 is excruciating enough based purely off the fantastic physics-based gameplay and the overall world we love to explore, but chuck in the fact that Episode 2 ended on a cliffhanger and we're dying to get stuck back in to make sure Alyx's psyche is in one piece.
