PUBG, Fortnite, Call of Duty Blackout, every other battle royale and his dog has this mechanic, and in every single one, your play area gradually reduces as an encroaching storm/danger zone/big-naughty-something will kill you otherwise.

In Fortnite, it is quite literally a storm, PUBG calls it The Playzone, Blackout doesn't have a name for it and Apex Legends also goes with "the storm".

Whilst these iterations don't cause any direct threat to the player, it does encourage a more active and fast-flowing style of gameplay. Gone are the old PvP days of camping on opposite sides of the map, waiting patiently. Instead, any death-bringing zone actively pushes you to get all chummy and close with your opponents; the penalty being death for those too far away.

It's a novel approach to arena combat, but one that makes for some of the most intense encounters in modern gaming.
