10 Final Fantasy Characters Nobody EVER Used
5. Kimahri (X)
Six of Final Fantasy X’s playable characters have clearly defined capabilities, which shoehorns them into particular roles throughout much of the game. Tidus is speed-focused, Wakka is best used against aerial threats, Auron can take down armoured enemies, Yuna can heal, Rikku can steal and Lulu is apt at dealing with creatures weak to magic. Kimahri is presented as completely malleable by comparison, having no pre-set route around the Sphere Grid outside of a handful of abilities.
Whilst this should make him flexible and able to function as a supporting character able to fill a number of roles, a jack-of-all-trades isn’t necessary in a game where in-battle switching of party members was made possible for the first time. It is much more effective to keep changing to the best character for each individual situation rather than having to make do with the second best.
Kimahri isn’t helped either by the fact that his Ronso Rage Overdrive is nowhere near as powerful (or voluminous) as the equivalent blue magic school in previous titles.
Eventual unfiltered access to the Sphere Grid eventually brings everybody onto a level playing field, where they can have 255 in every stat and learn every ability. By then, however, players will be more likely to stick with the characters that have served previous uses throughout the game, with Yuna and Wakka normally dead certs for two of the three main slots given the usefulness of summons and the sheer power of Attack Reels.
