10 Final Fantasy Characters Nobody EVER Used

4. Meliadoul (Tactics)

The job system originally introduced in Final Fantasy III and improved upon Final Fantasy V has been missing in action in the main series since then (though it did re-appear in sequel Final Fantasy X-2 and remaster Final Fantasy XII: Zodiac Age). It has always been the backbone of the Tactics side series, however, where it was arguably perfected first time around.

Tactics boasts twelve (fourteen in the War Of The Lions remake) party members with bespoke job classes, almost all of whom stand head and shoulders above the generic recruitable units given the power that many of their unique abilities possess. Some of these are even considered gamebreaking – Orlandeau for example can use all of the Holy Sword commands boasted by Agrias, all of the Unyielding Blade techniques boasted by Meliadoul and the two Dark Sword abilities used by temporary party member Gaffgarion for good measure, essentially making him a three-in-one killing machine.

Orleandeau’s existence in the party renders Agrias moot, though she is thoroughly useful throughout the game given how early on she is obtained and how long she has to develop. Meliadoul on the other hand is the last of the seven mandatory characters to join the party (Cloud, Reis, Beowulf, Byblos and Construct 8 being optional additions) and is already trounced in terms of ability.

Whilst several of the other characters aren’t great (Rapha and Marach both being quite hard to master), only Meliadoul serves no offensive purpose from the get go.
