6. Fear Effect
This game tried something new: looping full-motion video. This meant that the game had to be spread over four discs, though each disc was packed out with huge levels. The story concerned three outlaws - Hanna, Glas and Deke - who are in China looking to kidnap a local businessman's daughter who has gone on the run. What starts as a simple snatch-and-grab mission to hold her to ransom turns into an epic journey that will literally take them to Hell and back. The stand out feature of this game was its health bar. This took the form of a "fear gauge," which started your heart rate racing and caused your fear gauge to increase. Players managed to decrease the gauge by performing actions such as completing a puzzle or stealth killing an enemy. This game was followed by a prequel - explaining how the three main characters came to be associated with each other - and introduced a new character called Rain. This prequel was also the source of one of the game's more interesting advertising campaigns. It focused on Hanna and Rain in intimate poses with one another, wearing nothing but their underwear. Every gamer's fantasy came true. Why it needs a comeback: The concept was different and this really set it apart from other games. The styling of the backgrounds and the concept of looping videos was a different touch that worked in the game's favor. Coupled with the supernatural elements and clever use of puzzles, a third game most definitely needs to be made.
