10 Game Mechanics They DESPERATELY Wanted You To Love (But You Didn’t)

5. Dynamaxing - Pokémon Sword and Shield

Game Freak, look, it's easy to see where your head was at with this one. Seeing your favourite Pokémon become kaiju-sized colossi sounds incredible on paper. But, ultimately, this mechanic was less "woah" and more "meh."

As with many Pokémon games, Sword and Shield did their best to spice up the formula by adding new features and mechanics. This time, they brought in Dynamaxing, a feature that allowed pocket monsters to grow to ridiculous sizes and offered a temporary power boost.

Now, to give this gimmick credit, the animations were wicked. But the gameplay offerings were dry, as this mechanic was woefully unbalanced and mechanically limited. It looked cool but was hardly the major selling point it was advertised as.

Game Freak seemed to believe Pokémon fans would lose their minds over this. But, the reaction was more along the lines of, "It's fine, I guess." Now it's just another entry in the Pokémon gimmick Hall of Shame - or rather, Hall of Indifference.
