At this point, the twist premise of Undertale is known to almost everyone. However, if you're a first-time player or you just really don't care about reading, then, well, you're going to have a bad time!

Although Undertale can be played like a regular RPG, with EXP grinding and level scaling, in reality the game wants you to do the opposite. Instead of slaying the monsters around the area, you're supposed to get to know them and learn how to spare them whenever they attack you, to gain new friends and escape the underground together.

If you treat Undertale like any other RPG and ignore the story hints about the true nature of the game, then, at best, you'll end up with a neutral ending and, at worst, the genocide route when your nonchalant monster-slaying ways lead to the toughest fight in the game with Sans.

The fight is meant as a punishment for those who ignore the personal stories of all the underground residents. It's a way of showing that the mentality of killing mobs and getting stronger doesn't really work in every video game scenario.

Just because you can kill for more experience doesn't mean you should!
