10 Gaming Endings That Basically Doomed The Franchise

8. Desmond Dies - Assassin's Creed III

Though the Assassin's Creed franchise continues to be a critical and commercial success to this day, for many fans the series' lustre wore off considerably following the infuriating ending of 2012's Assassin's Creed III.

After all, the franchise's big conceit was its unexpected sci-fi twist, where the historical settings are actually genetic memories being accessed by the series' real protagonist, Desmond Miles.

Yet despite the clear implication that Desmond would eventually become an action hero in his own right, AC3 concluded with him semi-randomly sacrificing himself in order to save humanity.

Ever since, the franchise has dialled-back the modern day elements as it became clear nobody knew what to do with them post-Desmond, even though they were easily the most interesting and ambitious aspect of the series' mythology.

Though the subsequent games are (mostly) still fun to play, many fans are mentally checked out on the scrawled remnants of a plot that actually remain.
