Despite the fact cheap movie tie-ins have been around forever, Star Wars games usually turn out well. (At least before Battlefront.)

However, fans were justifiably cynical about any game connected with Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace because... do we have to explain why?

However, one of the film's few redeemable qualities was the pod-race sequence. This action-packed scene was such a blast to watch, LucasArts felt obligated to make a high-speed driving title called Star Wars Episode I: Racer.

Due to its smooth controls, customisable features, and diverse range of tracks, Racer proved to be, not just far better than its film counterpart, but one of the strongest Star Wars game ever. Racer was so accessible, it won over many gamers who aren't familiar with George Lucas' sci-fi franchise. Not only was Racer a hit with critics, it obliterated similar racers like Wipe Out and F-Zero, becoming the most successful sci-fi racing title of all time.

Considering Star Wars Episode I: Racer was recently rereleased on modern consoles, it's clear it still holds a special place in many gamers' hearts, even after 20 years.
