3. Vagrant Story
Though the 'Final Fantasy formula' works, you have to give credit to Square (in the past, at least) for experimenting with radically different takes on the RPG genre over the years rather than consistently adhering to the principle of 'if it isn't broke, don't fix it' with every title. Vagrant Story, released in 2000, is one such take. Though developed by the team responsible for Final Fantasy Tactics, the game utilises a real-time battle system similar to the one featured in Parasite Eve. It also forces players to think rather than relying on grinding and the purchase of powerful equipment, as progression requires the completion of puzzles, the handling of platforming elements and extensive player customisation and modification. The game was extremely difficult as a result, which put many players off the title despite the inclusion of a highly intriguing and engaging plot comparable in nature to the one featured in Tactics, which pits main character Ashley Riot against a cult. Like many of the other titles on this list, the game has been made available on the Playstation Network in recent years, giving players who never experienced it in their youth or who gave up on it out of frustration a chance to enjoy its unique visuals and gameplay.
