4. Kingdom Hearts
When it was first announced, Kingdom Hearts, a collaboration between Square and Disney, had its fair share of critics, many of whom thought that the game, an RPG incorporating Disney characters and elements of the Final Fantasy series (including a few characters), would be nothing more than a low quality cash cow for the huge American corporation, who aren't exactly known for the high standard of their gaming output. How wrong they were. Focusing predominantly on a handful of original characters (as well as Goofy and Donald Duck), the game was vast in scope, incorporating a host of visually beautiful worlds based on an assortment of Disney properties both old and new, and succeeded in appealing to both casual fans and hardcore enthusiasts with its complex yet accessible plot and simplistic yet strategic battle system. Kingdom Hearts II, a sequel followed in 2006 and succeeded where many sequels fail by actually surpassing its predecessor, offering players another whirlwind adventure with a wealth of enjoyable new content. Since 2006, Square and Disney have begun to push their luck by continuously delaying the production of the franchise's third game in favour of an assortment of handheld spin-offs (which are admittedly decent, but aren't in the same league as the two core games). Now it has been officially confirmed for Playstation 4 and Xbox One, however, the prospect is a scintillating one, particularly given all of the new properties that Disney have either developed or acquired over the last seven years that could be featured (see
this article for a more in-depth look at those).
