3. God of War (2018)
Santa Monica has always been known for one property. With the exception of Kinetica in 2001, the Sony-owned developer has worked entirely on God of War, and while the original trilogy spanning five years was a runaway success and rivalled the likes of Devil May Cry and Dynasty Warriors in the hack-and-slash genre, there was always more it could give.
By 2013, franchise fatigue set in for many gamers and the release of God of War: Ascension came and went with little notice. It was by no means a bad game, but ultimately failed to offer anything new at a time when so many genre-defining titles were dominating the AAA space.
For all intents and purposes, Kratos' journey was done after God of War: Ascension. However, the 2018 reboot not only revitalized the franchise, but took the gaming world by storm.
Taking Kratos to the unforgiving lands of Midgard and Norse mythology was the restart he needed, and a more grounded tale did well to make his character feel new again. In 2014 nobody was asking for another God of War game, but little did we all know it was exactly what we wanted.
