10 Great Video Game Sequels NOBODY Asked For

2. Guacamelee! 2

Final Fantasy Xiii Lightning
Drinkbox

Now recently in the spotlight in 2022 thanks to the release of Nobody Saves the World, Drinkbox Studios has been innovating and providing players with hours of entertainment since its first game release in 2011.

Just two years later, the Toronto-based developer released Guacamelee!, a Metroidvania platform/brawler that sported a gorgeous visuals and a charming story. It was one of the often-overlooked PlayStation Vita's best games, and showed that a smaller studio could take such a tried-and-tested genre and still find new ways to create fun.

With Drinkbox moving onto Severed in 2016, it seemed unlikely that Guacamelee! would ever receive a sequel, but a follow-up was released in 2018 that improved platforming, presented a surprisingly engaging narrative and upheld the expectations of fans of the first game.

Drinkbox is a studio known for innovation, so returning to Guacamelee! for a sequel to refine the experience was a welcome surprise, if a little unexpected. It seems increasingly unlikely that the trilogy is completed anytime soon. Anything is possible, though, especially as Guacamelee! 2 brought new eyes to a developer that never seems to get enough credit.
