10 Great Video Games That Didn't Get Good Until Halfway Through
7. Heavy Rain
You don't watch a truly great murder mystery expecting it to reveal the full plot right from the start, but the way that Heavy Rain chooses to delay it's more interesting elements has always felt wrong.
The first half is a jumbled mess of monotonous actions and vague occurrences, trying to introduce its characters and plot slowly, but failing to do so in a way that's enjoyable to play. The latter parts of Heavy Rain excel at emphasizing the importance and consequences of nearly every moment, but the beginning almost feels like a deterrent meant to weed out the impatient and unworthy.
It all works out in the end, but Heavy Rain's hook probably would have been just as powerful, if the opening half had given the player more to do than a series of chores.
