You know those Shenmue memes that always present this game as an adventure where you do nothing but ask people where to find sailors and collect toys? Most of those things happen in Shenmue's first half.
Shenmue was an ambitious game for its time but, like many ambitious games, suffered through some growing pains. Most of these happen in the beginning when the game holds your hand so tight that exploring anything truly interesting is never really an option.
When Shenmue decides to actually play up the whole "epic kung-fu revenge mystery" part of its story, things certainly pick up, but getting to that point does require patience
Unless, of course, you really do have a thing for hunting down sailors and unlocking capsule toys.
