10 Great Video Games Whose Later Levels Are Absolute Torture

4. Devil May Cry

Interestingly, Devil May Cry began life as Resident Evil 4. Capcom felt that the game's noticeably darker tones didn't suit the Resi franchise though and it became its own series; good job too as its spawned some great games. Many would herald Devil May Cry 3 as the series' highpoint but the first game is still a thrill-ride of an experience thanks to a great atmosphere, complex but satisfying combat and a ranking system which encourages repeat plays.

Completing the game on Normal difficulty is a tough task thanks to some taxing boss battles (final boss Mundus especially) but the real challenge lies in the unlockable difficulties €“ Hard and Dante Must Die. Every enemy in the game becomes more challenging with larger health pools and increased damage; finishing the job on all three difficulties is a huge test of patience and skill.

The game lacks the unique difficulties introduced later on in the series (Heaven Or Hell and Hell Or Hell in particular) but even by modern standards, the original Devil May Cry is so challenging that Capcom must have employed a devil to implant his unholy magic on the game.

I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
