10 Greatest Video Game Cult Heroes Of All Time

1. Wario

Mario may be the friendly face of Nintendo, pretty much keeping the company afloat with the help of a few other straight-laced heroes (you know who they are). But let's face it, Wario is the best character from the Super Mario universe. The garishly-coloured anti-hero adds much-needed mischief to Nintendo's squeaky-clean cast. Initially appearing as a villain, Nintendo soon realised that Wario was far too complex and interesting a character to typecast in such a way (sorry, Bowser), and he was soon granted the starring role inhis own games. While Wario's outings never earned the mainstream prestige of Mario, they've always received plenty of love from those who played them. While Mario jumped and fireballed his enemies, there was just something so charmingly thuggish about his obese kind-of nemesis, who shoulder-barged, bull-charged, and chucked objects at his enemies in the Wario Land games, and concocted strange activities for the player in WarioWare. As well as becoming a key character in all of Nintendo's ensemble games - such as Smash Bros, Mario Kart and Mario Tennis - Wario also has a tendency to show up in unexpected places, helping Mario and Luigi take on Bowser in Super Mario 64 DS, and even jumping in Bomberman's world in Wario Blast. Everyone loves Wario, and yet he's destined to always be the equivalent of an actor who wins 'Supporting Actor' Oscars rather than the top gong.
