10 Greatest Video Game Cult Heroes Of All Time

5. Michael Thorton - Alpha Protocol

Special Agent Thorton is a chauvinistic psychopathic, and for that he's become something of a cult icon in the gaming community. Is it really that simple to achieve cult status in this day and age? Well clearly... Take away the fact that he's a prolific shagger/murderer, and Thorton hasn't really got much going for him. In the world of video-games, being a generic, handsome 'special CIA agent' is equivalent to working in middle-management, making him a run-of-the-mill average Joe for the most part. Alpha Protocol wasn't a fantastic game, and yet the intriguing moral dilemmas and some truly bizarre sex scenarios that Thornton finds himself in indelibly entrenched it in gamers' memories. When I say 'intriguing' choice system, what I really mean of course is that Thornton is free to murder the vast majority of important storyline characters - which is a great way to get noticed on the gaming scene. The simple, savage options available to Thorton have been pure YouTube fodder. Since the game's release, salacious gamers have been uploading countless videos showing Thorton either a) doing the dirty with his colleagues or b) murdering them. With his substantial reputation stemming solely from sordid online videos, Thorton's pretty much the video-game equivalent of Paris Hylton.
