6. X-Men: Next Dimension

Something of a cult-classic, X-Men: Next Dimension is a 3D fighting game, very much in the Tekken and Virtua Fighter mould.

Released for PS2, GameCube, and Xbox in 2002, the title featured a cast of characters including the obvious likes of Wolverine, Storm, and Rogue, but also allowed the player to jump into battle as Toad, Havok, and even the Sentinels.

Stage transitions play a huge role in Next Dimension, as characters are thrown out of windows, kicked through walls, thrown of buildings, and smashed through the floor with reckless abandon, adding to the spectacle of the battles and in-keeping with the established tropes of the comic book universe upon which the game is based.

Featuring a story mode which serves as a sequel to the Operation: Zero Tolerance comic arc, as well as two player versus mode, arcade mode, and a survival mode, the game at least offers some variety in its gameplay.

As for the fighting itself, it is fairly impressive here, with the usual array of kicks and punches complimented by combo chains, air juggles, and counter attacks.

X-Men: Next Dimension may seem a little dated by today's standards, but it should definitely not be overlooked.
