8. Fujin and Raijin (FFVIII)
The only other pairing that absolutely work as a double act, these two, named for the gods of wind and thunder in Shinto lore, are as loyal and steely as the day is long. When their ringleader Seifer turns his back on Garden for dreams of glory and most likely a tumble in bed with Edea (hard to resist, granted), they don't even question or hesitate when it comes to joining him. Turning their backs on Garden, Squall and all their fellows, they risk it all to help Seifer pursue his dream. What makes them so memorable, though, is their dynamic. In the entire game, Fujin speaks only through shouts, almost always in one word, barking orders to Raijin, who plays the part of dumb muscle to Fujin's domineering wife. Unlike Zorn and Thorn, they never really do anything truly despicable, and even reach a point where they confess to Seifer they don't want to follow him any more. Surprisingly, it's one of the most emotional and poignant moments in the entire game it even prompts Fujin to speak softly and in full sentences, the only instance in the game of her doing so. Similarly, the scene between them and Squall and company after their first battle is oddly touching when you see the extent of their devotion to Seifer, even though it means they'll now be fighting against the very people they accepted as family their entire lives. Fujin and Raijin walk a very fine line between the comedic and the tragic, and that's what makes them so brilliantly memorable.
