3. Minecraft
Originally launched on the PC, Minecraft eventually made its way to iOS in late 2011, proving an immediate success with an entire generation of mobile players, having reached 100 million registered users by February 2014. An entire community has sprung up around the game, particularly on YouTube, focusing on players building constructions out of textured cubes in order to survive a cruel and harsh 3D environment. The intentionally dated look belies its charm and Minecraft swept all before it in various awards throughout 2011 and 2012, including the Golden Joystick Award in Best Downloadable Game. Such has been the success of Minecraft, that game creators Mojang was bought out by Microsoft in a deal worth $2.5bn in November 2014.
