7. Big Boss Is A Jerk

He's a jerk, just for the record. Even the very first Metal Gear game was ripe with intrigue and betrayals, none more shocking than the one that happens at the very end of the game. Your entire reason for being in the fortress of Outer Heaven was orchestrated by this tool, the leader of the mercenaries who hoped to take down everyone in his path. Later events in Metal Gear Solid 1 would retcon Snake as the clone son of Big Boss, but this was the initial start of the rivalry between the two. In an era where deep storytelling was completely foreign to video games, Kojima was already trying to blur the line between gaming and film. The climax of the first Metal Gear game feels like it's ripped straight from a Hollywood blockbuster, complete with a last-minute countdown and a huge explosion to cap it all off. Big Boss' myth started right here, courtesy of a shocking betrayal that is still paying off for the series all these years later.
