A true pioneer of the RPG genre, Final Fantasy VII released in 1997 to world-wide acclaim, and is seen as one of the greatest and most influential video games ever made.

The game follows mercenary Cloud, who takes his giant sword with him to help an eco-terrorist organisation fight to protect the planet from the clutches of evil megacorporation Shinra and their superpowered lackey Sephiroth.

Final Fantasy VII was the game that cemented RPGs as a staple of the video game industry and truly sold the western world on the merit of JRPGs, with many citing the game as one of their earliest and best gaming experiences.

It's not difficult to understand why. Despite the limitations of the time, Final Fantasy VII was lauded for its visuals, audio, and story, and it holds up remarkably well even today.

Final Fantasy VII is a rare example of a game that is universally loved, and despite its age, it's still one of the best-loved RPGs ever created.
