If covert assassinations are more your sort of thing, there are few better gaming ninjas than the legendary Rikimaru of Tenchu fame.

The son of a samurai who wound up getting assassinated by Azuma Shiunsai, Rikimaru was raised as part of the Azuma clan by his father's killer and eventually rose to become their youngest ever leader. Before all of that though, gamers became acquainted with him as he battled to protect the clan and Lord Gohda - who he defended from the forces of the evil Lord Mei-Oh.

Coming out at the height of the stealth craze caused by the release of Metal Gear Solid, Tenchu was the first game that really made you feel like a ninja as it emphasised stealthy kills above all else. Rikimaru spends most of his time in the shadows, sneaking up on his enemies before delivering the killer blow in true ninja fashion.

Rikimaru would eventually go on to star in a slew of Tenchu games - not all of which really came close to matching the quality of the first in the series - and in each one he proved his badass ninja credentials over and over again.
