10 Greatest Video Game Voice Performances Of All-Time
2. Solid Snake - Metal Gear Solid Franchise - Voiced By David Hayter David Hayter is Solid Snake. He may as well officially change his name, pull on an eye patch and sneak around his home town in the dark. Fifteen years of brooding intensity from this industry veteran have seen him imbue an irreplaceable air of authenticity into the gruff-toned Metal Gear Solid hero - it's a role which Hayter seems to have allowed to swallow him whole, and a performance which saw Solid Snake emerging as a de facto brand ambassador for Playstation through most of his career. It's impressive to build a character which is so entrenched in the minds of the gaming public, but even more so when we're talking about an industry already teeming with edgy, moody male protagonists shrouded in bitterness and invariably some sort of trendy face stubble. Hayter's portrayal of Solid Snake saw the character stand out above his peers - your Max Paynes, your Sam Fishers and the rest - to capture audiences in a way usually reserved for movie stars. Tragedy struck for the millions of Solid Snake acolytes last year when it was announced that the legendary partnership of Hayter and Snake has been severed, with series creator Hideo Kojima deciding to take things in a new direction with 24's Kiefer Sutherland. While we should have faith that Kojima knows best, this still marks great loss for the franchise, and the end of an unforgettable character as we know him.
