10 Greatest Video Game Voice Performances Of All-Time
4. GlaDOS - Portal Franchise - Voiced By Ellen McLain Where Stephen Merchant's unfocused, motormouthed vocal delivery for Portal 2's Wheatley gave us a troubled robot with hints of frailty under his devious shell, Ellen McLain's GlaDOS was the antithesis - a poisonous, self assured AI guide who can barely hide her contempt for the player character. Deliberate, sadistic, hilarious, GlaDOS led us all to a fiery demise like a robotic Pied Piper, and we loved her for it. The ultimate in unseen evil, GlaDOS taunted us through the halls of Aperture Labs with her derisive commentary and flat, emotionless reactions, embroidering a dry and bitterly sarcastic sense of humour into a disembodied voice. One of few examples of properly funny writing in the gaming world, McLain's performance was a shining example of how a voice alone can mesmerise the audience without the help of any character modelling, fancy motion capture or other visual accompaniment. Wheatley may be the more loveable of the two, but GlaDOS has to be the standard bearer for all other malevolent AI overlords to aspire to - something McLain pulled off with little more than her computer-manipulated voice and the enduring promise of cake.
