The original God of War game’s titular character, Ares, is about as difficult to fight as you would imagine someone with such a title would be. Even with protagonist anti-hero Kratos having learned numerous combat skills across the campaign, this is going to be no small task to take on.

Ares is one of few bosses on this list who isn’t optional when trying to beat the main story. Despite him being the final boss in a very combat-heavy game, you’re likely to still feel woefully unprepared when facing him for the first time (especially in the later stages of the fight.)

The fight with Ares comes in three phases. The first is a simple dodge and range-attack affair. Plenty magic orbs are available so using magic makes this part relatively easy. Secondly, Kratos is transported into his own nightmares and has to fend off multiple manifestations of himself.

Again, magic can help, but the horde is much trickier to handle.

The final phase earns Ares his place on this list. He strips Kratos of all of his powers, leaving him to chip away at the health bar with nothing but basic melee attacks; all while having to avoid various deadly environmental effects.

This was never going to be easy. You are fighting a literal god, after all.
