3. God of War Is Nothing More Than A Brainless Hack 'N Slash Game
The Awesome: Best-selling action adventure franchise that pits the player as a vengeful Greek demigod who takes on the Gods in a series of epic, larger-than-life encounters. Gleeful violence ensues.
The Truth: Superbly executed though these games unquestionably are, is there really much more to them than meets the eye? This might be gorier and boast slicker graphics than we're used to for the genre, but is it really much different than the hack 'n slash titles we've been playing since forever? Don't get me wrong; I'm not ragging on the simplicity of the genre, but given the ecstatically positive reviews the series has generally received, one might have expected more nuance than button bashing and relatively simplistic - though gloriously enjoyable - combat. There's not a lot of intelligence to the games, though they do deliver some brilliantly brutal set-pieces.
