Amnesia: The Dark Descent was arguably the game that brought the dying survival horror genre back to life and is filled with shining examples of psychological terror. After a slow-paced and relatively uneventful but thoroughly haunting opening, the action ramps up in a big way when players get down to the flooded subterranean tunnels of the game's mansion location and come head-to-head with a mysterious aquatic creature that eats away at their health with startling speed.

The game spends a huge amount of time building up the tension and suspense until finally letting all that pressure come crashing down in this frightening and fast-paced section, with players forced to leap from one floating object to the next in a desperate attempt to keep their feet dry and their health bar intact.

What's so impressive about this section is that all we ever see of Kaernk (yes, that's the water monster's actual name) is nothing but a few ripples on the surface. Proving that less is more and the fear of the unknown can be highly effective, the developers purposefully kept the beast hidden away beneath the surface, leaving its appearance entirely up to the player's imagination.
